From Sharon Whitney - I was delighted to read the following article in the 4/4/07 Wisconsin State Journal:
St. John’s Lutheran Church on East Washington as been recognized by
Lutherans Concerned of North America as the most recent “Reconciling
in Christ” congregation in Madison. It is the third ELCA Lutheran congregation
to join the group, which also includes Advent Lutheran Church and Lake Edge
Lutheran Church.
The recognition comes after the congregation overwhelmingly voted in November
in (sic) to adopt a public statement of welcome for people of all sexual orientations
and gender identities.
About a year ago I was invited to represent PFLAG at a meeting discussing LGTB issues and becoming a wel-coming congregation. Spreading our word helps.
The interim Regional Director for the Northern Plains division of PFLAG (WI, MN, ND, and SD) is now Kay Heggestad, our current Madison chapter president. She was named to this post on April 5 and will likely be-come a director for a two year term starting after the official election at the national annual convention in October.
Please check with Diane Wensel about volunteer opportunities.
Please consider attending this event in Washington, D.C. It starts with a lobby day on Oct. 11. The meeting begins on Friday, Oct. 12 and ends after lunch on Sunday, October 14. Paul Wertsch has offered to do a pres-entation at the meeting. Cost for one person is $240 and spouse or partner cost is $215. See the national web site for full details at www.pflag.org. Please let Kay know if you plan to attend.
First market is Saturday, April 21 and Kay needs sitters. Email her to reserve a time from 8-10 or 10-12 for any Saturday morning. First come, first served. Jo Elder will be doing the hard job of bringing and taking the market table and supplies.
(from a Task Force Press Release)
WASHINGTON, March 23 — A coalition of national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) groups today sent a letter to Mayor Rosemary Aultman of Clinton, Miss., in response to recent police harassment of Soulforce Equality Riders. The coalition included the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Lambda Legal, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the Log Cabin Republicans and the Human Rights Campaign. Leaders also placed calls to Mayor Aultman’s office.
Equality Riders seek to engage in conversation with students, faculty and administrators at colleges and universities with policies that ban the enrollment of openly LGBT students
