Next Meeting - Sept. 16, 2007

Fair Wisconsin

Eva Shiffrin, the new Executive Director of Fair Wisconsin, will tell us about Fair Wis-consin's activities in 2007 and plans for 2008. As a founding member of Attorneys Against the Ban, Eva traveled all over the state speaking out against the amendment. Eva has been an advocate for LGBT equality since high school. She was an LGBT activist as both an undergraduate and at law school. Prior to her new position at Fair Wisconsin Eva was employed at Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assaults as a staff attorney and the Wisconsin Coalition for Aging also as a Staff Attorney.

After the break, before our discussion period, we will vote on the chapter bylaws and dis-tribute PFLAG cards suitable for leaving at restaurants and other business places.

CHAPTER PRESIDENT'S NOTE

(Kay Heggestad)

Hello and Happy September to all members of the Madison chapter. I became a regional director of our or-ganization a few months ago and have received a new perspective on our mission. Although the need for sup-port for new parents and families of GLBT is a definite and real need and, in my opinion, is still the most im-portant part of our mission, the extent of support needed has lessened. Fewer parents and friends seem to need support in the first place and those that need support seem to need it for a shorter period. We are using fewer tissues at our meetings now than we did 10-20 years ago.

With that in mind, I would suggest that we start focusing more on the advocacy and education parts of our mission. Straight people are in a unique position for advocacy and even more so if they have no direct connec-tion with GLBT such as parents and siblings do. I therefore call upon you to get more involved in advocacy when you no longer feel the need for support and to also actively talk to your straight friends and get them in-volved with us.

PFLAG Cruise in March, 2008

This is a week cruise that leaves from San Diego. See national web site ( www.pflag.org ) for details. It is for PFLAGers and LGBT folks and all of our families. Plan on going and taking your extended family with you. Cindy Lauper is the headliner.

PFLAG Membership Dues are Due Now

No, the amount has not changed, but the date on which National PFLAG would like us to collect and pay our portion to them has changed. Instead of a calendar year membership, they have switched to a program year membership.

To accommodate this switch, our chapter is asking you to submit your membership dues ($40/couple, $30/single) to our treasurer, Karen Baker by September 2007. Additional amounts for contribu-tions to our local PFLAG organization are very appreciated. Please find the membership form on our website. If you are a current member and nothing has “changed” (address, phone or e-mail), then submitting your check is sufficient.

Bylaws

The PFLAG board has reviewed and revised the bylaws for the Madison chapter. Those who are paid PFLAG members will receive a copy of these revised bylaws. If you receive a printed copy of the bylaws please review it before the September meeting. The membership will vote on approval of those revised bylaws at that meeting.
