Next Meeting - October 17, 2010Partnerships with the Faith Community This meeting continues this year's emphasis on advocacy with a focus on religious organizations. We will have a panel of representatives from the faith community offering a wide range of choices for our members. We hope to have representation from Catholic, United Methodist, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, Unitarian, ELCA Lutheran, and Jewish faiths. Come hear what is happening in each of these denominations. |
We have received S4E (Straight for Equality) booklets and field manuals that suggest ways we can help our health care providers be more sensitive to LGBT health care issues. Kay will discuss this further at our November meeting.
The outdoor market has begun and we again have a table on the South Hamilton corner of the Square.
We need sitters for two hour slots: 8-10 or 10-12 every Saturday through early November. Please contact Tuet Cullen at mockingbird77@gmail.com or call 852-7263.

We are excited about our chapter’s new plans putting a special emphasis on advocacy for our LGBT community members. The first 3 months of this year we will be building partnerships with groups in the areas of education, faith communities and healthcare. We have contacted past members. Their support is greatly appreciated and we hope they will share their ideas and expertise on these topics. October will focus on the faith community.

Wins:
Associated Press-National Constitution Center poll asked "What would people change if they were in charge? The poll found growing sentiment for legal protections for same-sex couples, with 58% saying they should have the same government benefits as married heterosexuals and nearly as many backing federal recognition of gay marriage."
From DignityUSA News: WASHINGTON, DC., September 29, 2010-Four longstanding Catholic organizations announced today that they have formed Equally Blessed, a coalition of faithful Catholics who support full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people both in the church and in civil society. "As Catholics, we believe that all human beings are beloved children of God," said Francis DeBernardo, executive director of New Ways Ministry, an Equally Blessed member. "We are called to do our part in bringing about justice in the church and the world, and Equally Blessed will allow us to do that together." The coalition also includes Call To Action, DignityUSA and Fortunate Families. Together the four groups have spent a combined 112 years working on behalf of LGBT people and their families. "Equally Blessed proclaims what most U.S. Catholics already believe," said Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of DignityUSA. "The laws of our land and the policies of our church should mandate fairness, justice and equality for all."
Losses:
The Republican Party in Montana adopted an official platform keeping the long-held position of supporting homosexual acts as illegal, even after the Montana Supreme Court struck down those laws in 1997.
Those who support Knights of Columbus might do well to review
the National Catholic Reporter (NCR) article that can be found at http://ncronline.org/node/20520/
. This article describes how the Knights of Columbus have contributed
$1.4 million of their charitable contributions, not to the needy, but to
the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a political organization that
seeks to deny same-gender couples the civil freedom to marry.
Members have just received their Fall/Winter 2010 issue of PFLAGPOLE. Please be sure to see the Member Spotlight. Our president, Karen Baker, is featured receiving some well-deserved kudos. Our Kay Heggesstad, Regional Director and National PFLAG Board of Directors member, wrote this very nice article honoring Karen.
Did you read the article titled “Older LGBT Couples Are Unfairly Treated” which was in the September 22-28 Capital Times section included each Wednesday in the Wisconsin State Journal? Written by Barbara Quick, a Madison geriatric nurse practitioner, the article lists several organizations that sponsored a study on older LGBT people. The study concluded that “LGBT elders face unique challenges that make successful aging more difficult than for their heterosexual peers.” A second article discussed how “Advocates Try to Help LGBT Seniors Who Lack Legal Protections and Support.”
